The resurgence of Lawrence

TE Lawrence, that is, Lawrence of Arabia, is enjoying something of a resurgence right now.

First, there’s a rather splendid series on the BBC, The Legacy of Lawrence of Arabia.

And then Daniel Pipes, neo-conish academic, finds that entirely without irony, the US military are studying Lawrence’s writings.

I say without irony because surely one of the key lessons he learned was that it works best for everyone if we simply let the Arabs get on with being themselves and not seek to dominate them as the Ottoman Empire had and then the British and French proceeded to do.
